Clinical Study of Intussusception


Abstract
Clinical evaluation was performed on, 156 patients of intussusception who were treated at Depart. of General Surgery in Seoul Red Cross Hospital during the period of 10 years from Jan. 1971 to Dec. 1980 and the following results were obtained.
1) In the age distribution, which was prevalent under 1 year old (76.3%), especially from 4th to 12th month of age (66.0 %).
2) Male to female ratio was 2.3 1
3) On the seasonal distribution, the cases in the spring were the most common (34.6%).
4) The patient who visited to Hospital within 24 hrs. from onset of the symptoms were occupied in 63.5%.
5) The etiology were idiopathic in.93.6% of cases and there were suspected lead point in 6.4%.
6) The clinical symptoms and signs were abdominal pain with irritability (84. 0%), mucoid bloody stool (78.8%), vomiting (67-37o) and palpable abdominal mass(46.8%).
7) The simple plain abdominal film revealed gaseous distension (64.7%), air fluid level (23.5%) and nonspecific (11.8%).
8) The anatomicc types of intussusception, iliocolic type was the most comm. (53.4%) and ileocecal type was next.(25.6 %).
9) The hydrostatic barium reduction was performed in 77 cases and was successful in 33..8%.
10) In the surgical procedure manual reduction was performed in 96 cases (72.7%), ilealresection in 16(12.0%), right hemicolectomy in 6(4.57,o) and spontaneous reduction in 15
11) The post operative complication was developed in 22.6%. 12) The mortality rate was 2.5%.
